It all started in 1998 with a vacant lot on the Galveston Seawall, three empty houses and a great idea. The land was undeveloped, and the houses set to be demolished, but our founders had a vision. They set out to save the houses — picking them up, bringing them to the Seawall and transforming them into a restaurant. After several months of hard work (not to mention a few sleepless nights), their vision took shape, and The Spot was born.
Flash forward to 2002: The Spot changed hands and was purchased by BOI (born on the island) Galveston local Dennis Byrd. Dennis was one of the original Spot employees and had worked his way up from dishwasher to delivery boy, cashier to cook. As he learned the ropes of the restaurant industry, he also discovered his passion for business and set his sights on running the restaurant.
With Dennis at the helm, The Spot has grown exponentially, expanding year after year to become, well, Island Famous. Today, the hospitality group includes four beachfront bars, two hotels along the Seawall and family-friendly restaurants in Galveston, League City and Houston Hobby Airport.
The Spot, Tiki Bar, SideYard, RumShack, Squeeze, Longboard Pool Bar, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Galveston Beach and DoubleTree Galveston Beach are all managed by Island Famous, Inc., a hospitality group based in Galveston, Texas.
